Stop Hiding Behind Your Acne Scars: Icon Laser Can Help You Feel More Like Yourself Again

A study that surveyed more than 4,500 participants found that people with acne scars are less likely to be perceived as attractive, confident, happy, healthy, and successful compared to people without scarring. If you’re unhappy with how your skin looks because you have acne scars, that information probably doesn’t come as a surprise.

What might surprise you, though, is that effective treatments that can reduce the appearance of your scars are available. Here at Patrick County Family Practice, Astrid Cole, RN, offers a procedure known as laser skin resurfacing with the Icon system.

Fractional laser energy

The Icon system uses the energy from a fractional laser to break down the scar tissue and to trigger your body to produce new tissue. The result is smoother, more evenly toned skin.

The laser delivers extremely precise microbeams of energy deep into your skin. The process stimulates your body’s healing response, which is why it produces new tissue. The new tissue gives you a fresher, more youthful look, in addition to reducing the appearance of your scars.

That sounds painful!

A fractional laser is not at all the kind of laser you see in science fiction. It’s controlled, precise, and pain-free. You feel the device against your skin, and you may feel a gentle heat, but you won’t be uncomfortable.

A treatment with the Icon system is noninvasive, meaning you won’t have even a needle stick.

How long does it take?

The length of time for your treatment depends on several factors, but generally, an Icon treatment for acne scarring takes around 30 minutes. In other words, you can get rid of your acne scars during your lunch hour!

What about recovery?

You may have some slight redness and minor swelling after your treatment, and you’ll need to be careful to protect your skin from the sun, but there’s no reason you shouldn’t be able to return to your normal activities immediately. Unlike some cosmetic procedures, Icon laser treatments don’t require recovery time.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments you need depends on several factors, such as the extent of your scarring, the area being treated, and even your skin type. The vast majority of patients need somewhere between three and seven treatments in order to get the results they want.

You don’t have to live with acne scarring

Whether we like it or not, the first impression matters. Acne scars don’t only affect your appearance, they also impact your confidence.

If you’re unhappy with how you look because you have scars, you don’t have to live with them. Fractional laser skin resurfacing is safe and effective and can change your appearance. When you’re happier with how you look, you’re more confident, too.
