You can’t avoid facial wrinkles, but that doesn’t mean you have to accept putting up with them. Botox® and dermal fillers are two types of injectable treatments that effectively diminish the appearance of all types of moderate to severe wrinkles, from forehead furrows to laugh lines. Astrid Cole, RN, at Patrick County Family Practice specializes in cosmetic treatments such as Botox. If you’re ready to rejuvenate your appearance, call the office or book an appointment online today.
Botox is a purified form of botulinum toxin that’s often used to treat medical conditions such as eyelid spasms and migraines. However, Botox is best known for its remarkable ability to erase deep facial wrinkles.
When Botox is injected into muscles, it temporarily blocks the nerve signals that trigger muscle contraction. This mechanism of action means Botox is effective for a specific type of wrinkle called a dynamic wrinkle.
Dynamic wrinkles develop from muscle movements that are constantly repeated over the years. These movements are responsible for some of the deepest wrinkles on your face such as:
After Astrid Cole injects a small amount of Botox, the muscles relax and their associated wrinkle is significantly diminished or, in many cases, eliminated.
Since only a few precise muscles are injected with Botox, your face still looks natural and you’ll be able to make facial expressions.
Before your treatment, Astrid explains the procedure and talks about whether you’ll want to use a topical anesthetic. A usual Botox session lasts about 15 minutes, depending on the area being treated.
After your injections are finished, the treated area may be slightly red, swollen, or bruised. These side effects won’t last long, and in the meantime, you can cover the area with makeup if desired. You won’t require any downtime, but should avoid strenuous activities for several hours immediately afterward.
It takes 24-48 hours for Botox to fully relax the muscles, after which your new appearance lasts up to four months.* The effect gradually wears off, but you can receive another Botox treatment to maintain your results. As you get additional injections, the results tend to last longer.
Dermal fillers also smooth away wrinkles, but they’re different from Botox. For starters, fillers are injected under your skin, not into muscles. This type of injectable treats moderate to severe wrinkles around your mouth and nose. Astrid can also use dermal fillers to add volume to your cheeks and lips.
Many dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid, which is naturally produced in your skin where it’s essential for hydration and fullness. When Astrid injects a dermal filler below a wrinkle, the filler plumps up the area and diminishes the wrinkle.
